The Hopi Prophecy
The Hopi have a prophecy, preserved in the form of a picture carved in the prophecy rock of Oraibi. The city of Old Oraibi in Hotevilla , Arizona is believed to be the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in the US , occupied since as early as 1150 AD. The prophecy concerns two possible outcomes for the human race. The Hopis say that meaning of this petroglyph is very clear: Either humanity will follow the path of Spirit or the path of destruction.
In the owa'veni (rock writing or petroglyph), the Great Spirit is the large human figure to the left. His left hand is putting down a bow, symbolising the instruction from the Great Spirit to the Hopi to put down their weapons. In his right hand is the reed through which, according to Hopi legend, humanity entered this, the fourth world that the Great Spirit has created.
After entering this world, each member of humanity chose either one of two paths. The upper path represents the path of materialism. The four people on it have their heads separated from and floating above their bodies. This symbolises that they are separated from their spirituality and live "in their heads alone". The line they are on turns into a diagonal zigzag line going up and ending nowhere. The lower line remains horizontal and strong. The Indian upon it to the right is tending his corn, and lives a long, healthy and fruitful life. This line is said to go on forever.

The Hopis say that humanity has the chance to try out both lines and go back and forth between them along the vertical lines in the diagram. However, there comes a time symbolised by the last vertical line at which point the irrevocable choice is made. Either one goes on the upper path of comfort, profit and greed, or one chooses the lower path of the soul, the path of love, strength and balance.
The prophecy says that there will be three "great shakings". Hopi elders say the first two world wars are the first two of these. Some believe that the symbols on prophecy rock of the swastika ( Germany ) and the red sun ( Japan ) refer to the perpetrators of these two wars.
The two circles on the lower line represent the first two shakings - the two world wars. After the last vertical line, there is a small circle that represents the great purification. The nature of this third shaking remains a mystery. Hopis say it will involve a great dividing of the good from the bad. Hopis say that how it appears upon the earth and its outcome will depend upon how we are living.
The prophecies also say that just before the great purification there will be many signs. These include trees dying, man building a house in the sky, major changes of climate, earthquakes and famine. Many consider that we are very near the time of purification. We must choose which path we are on.
A Hopi Elder has said, "You have been telling the people that this is the eleventh hour. Now go and tell them THIS IS THE HOUR!" In order to be firmly on the lower path, there are ten things to consider:
Where are you living?
Know your garden.
What are you doing?
It is time to speak your truth.
What are your relationships?
Create your community.
Are you in right relationship?
Be good to each other.
Where is your water?
Never look outside of yourself for the leader.
